Bumpdate – 4 months!

How many weeks along: 18 Weeks

Gender: She’s a girl 🙂

Total Weight Gain: about 10lbs (F%&#!)

Maternity Style: I’m slowly learning how to dress this changing body of mine. The weight gain has been quicker and more widely distributed than when I was pregnant with Dom. Thighs are thicker, hips are wider, and the belly is – prominent. Learning how to dress for the hot summer weather is the real struggle, especially when you don’t want to wear a dress every day and maternity shorts are an abomination (seriously – can someone make a decent pair of maternity shorts? Anyone?). I’ll get it eventually, keep an eye out for #OOTDs soon.

Sleep: Sleeping well. Less and less on my stomach but still comfortable for the most part. Now that my uterus has moved off my bladder I’m peeing less which is also nice.

What I’m missing: Micheladas. Bad. Other than that I’m good. I don’t adhere to the strict pregnancy “do not eat” list so there aren’t a lot of things that I deprive myself of but alcohol is obviously one that I do so – see you you in 5 months delicious michis!

Cravings: I’ve never been a craver. There are things I love to eat more than others but I’m not sending my husband out at 11PM for pickles and ice cream, if you know what I mean. I am obsessed with eating Outshine lemon fruit bars though. They taste like a tart soft-frozen lemonade and always hit the spot especially on a hot day. I buy boxes 3 at a time – no lie. At 70 calories a pop it’s hard to not justify eating a few in a day. But I’m working on it, LOL.

Symptoms: I spent the first half of month 4 frustrated with my seemingly never-ending all day nausea and food aversions. I think at one point I tried to come to terms with the fact that it might never end. Luckily, at week 17, the sun emerged from the clouds and I was able to start feeling like my old self. My main symptoms were morning sickness and a general lack of energy.

Body Changes: I would be lying if I told you I wasn’t stressed about the weight gain this time around. My metabolism took a quick dive after my miscarriage, and it has been so hard for me to get back into the swing of things since. Weekly workouts with Evelyn at Maternifit beginning at Week 14 are keeping me active while also getting my body prepped for labor. My goal is to keep it up (along with lots of walking) until Week 38. Fingers crossed!

Mood: Upbeat. Not feeling like you’re perpetually hungover every minute of every day will do that to you. I have my moments, I’m sure (sorry babe) but for the most part I’m feeling wonderfully optimistic.

Highlights: Feeling like a normal human being again! First trimester kicked my ass. Big time. Getting back to my regular eating habits and routine is so refreshing. Also, I started feeling flutters at week 14 that turned into pops and kicks at week 16. It is the strangest feeling but it’s welcome, I love being gently reminded that there’s a little human growing inside me – we’ll see how I feel when the reminders are less gentle! 🙂

Looking Forward to: Getting to see my little girl at our Level 2 Ultrasound in 19 weeks. Fingers crossed she’s still a girl LOL!

Exercise: Getting in the groove with my workouts. I love going to see my trainer Evelyn, at Maternifit. We do lots of upper body, squats, lunges, and modified core work to get my body ready for labor. I have to admit I was dying a  bit at first since I hadn’t worked out in FOREVER but I’m a month in now and really looking forward to my workouts every week.

On My Mind:  I’m getting anxious to get to the halfway point, and to make sure our little girl is growing as she should. The 1st Trimester is all about worrying about things like pregnancy viability and NT Scans and the first half of the 2nd Trimester is like, “I hope her eyeballs are in the right place and her heart works properly.” Basically, there is never not anything to worry about.

16 Weeks.

It’s a…

You didn’t think I was just going to tell you right off the bat, did you?

First let’s put those old wives tales to the test and see how they stack up in real life.

Mother’s Intuition: Boy

Morning Sickness: All day. Girl

Dad’s Weight Gain (so far): Maintaining. Girl

Ring Test: Girl

Baby’s Heart Rate: Over 140 BPM. Girl.

Cravings: Salty/Savory. Boy

Mom’s Weight Gain: All over. Girl

Cold Feet: No. Girl

Final Tally: Girl-8 Boy-4

…it’s a girl!

We are so incredibly overjoyed to complete our family with a baby girl. I don’t think I have ever seen my husband rendered speechless. Let the shopping commence!

Bumpdate – 3 months

I’m so excited to be back to blogging! I had zero desire to do literally anything my entire 1st Trimester so it feels good to get some energy back and get back to doing things I love. I’m so excited to be able to documents these monthly “bumpdates” for you guys!

How many weeks along: 14 weeks

Gender: Still a secret…

Total Weight Gain: about 5lbs

Maternity Style: Haven’t had to invest in any maternity clothes (yet). When I was pregnant with my son, I never had to wear any at all. I gained all my weight in my belly and it was high so I just wore my regular low-rise jeans and leggings. This time, since my body isn’t 24 anymore and I still have 5 residual pounds from my last pregnancy – they weight is distributed differently. I’m going to have to pony up for a couple good pairs of maternity jeans and several pairs of nice, thick leggings since I live in them most of the time. Luckily I can stick to regular sized tops, dresses and outerwear and just buy a size up if needed. I LOVE dressing my bump so I can’t wait to get some energy back and start looking more pregnant, rather than just bloated.

Sleep: I’m sleeping fine. Much better than than in the first couple months, actually. I can still sleep on my stomach although it’s getting less and less comfortable. I never had a pregnancy pillow with my first but it’s looking more and more appealing and the weeks go on. We’ll see…

What I’m missing: The summer weather is making it’s way so I definitely miss an ice cold beer over lunch or a skinny margarita poolside. It’s been a long, exhausting first trimester for me this time – so I miss feeling normal, eating normal and having energy. It’s slowly starting to get better so I’m optimistic.

Cravings: The 1st trimester (for me) is all about survival. I feel sick if my stomach is empty, but food sounds completely unappealing. Pair that with no desire to cook, and you get  a LOT of high fat, high carb takeout. Not the best, but like I said, I’m just trying to make it through the day.

Symptoms: Sore boobs, all-day nausea, vomiting on an empty stomach, and overall laziness. I was very lucky to have very mild 1st trimester symptoms with my son but this time, Baby #2 is kicking my ass.

Body Changes: I’m filling out in all the wrong places (LOL), so I just look fat. My boobs are looking enormous, my hair is greasy, and my skin in unpredictable. Honestly, it wouldn’t surprise me if Baby #2 is a girl, since I’ve always heard girls steal your beauty. I felt like a goddess when I was pregnant with my son and just feel gross this time. Fingers crossed it passes and I get my shit together (haha)!

Mood: Dom and I got nasty colds this week, so we’re both sick and cranky. Mixed with unpredictable pregnancy hormones, the result is a mess.

Highlights: Of course my ultrasounds! Because this is my rainbow baby, I was SO nervous for my first doctors appointment and dating ultrasound. When I saw that little ghost-like figure on the monitor I literally lost my breath. So much joy and gratitude was felt at that moment.

Baby V at 9 weeks

Then, I got to see my little ghost again at my 12 weeks NT scan, and got the good news that everything was looking perfect. Such a sigh of relief. It felt amazing to finally exhale all the apprehension and begin to enjoy what will very likely be my last pregnancy.

FullSizeRender (16)
Baby V at 12 weeks

Looking Forward to: The 2nd Trimester glow and learning our baby’s gender next week!

Exercise: Please. I couldn’t even get myself out of bed most days. Now that the 1st Trimester symptoms are fading I am so excited to get started with my fitness routine. I joined an amazing gym just for expectant mamas so I could get a regimen tailored to my changing body. I believe fitness is key to smooth deliveries so I’m eager to get started.

On My Mind:  The thought of having 2 little ones is starting to feel a bit overwhelming. Dom is a very spirited child, he requires constant one on one attention and is VERY emotional. I worry that when a new baby comes into the mix, it is going to completely throw his world out of orbit. Obviously he is my entire world and has been for the past 3 years, so I get emotional and worried he will feel like he is being replaced. I definitely need to buy some books to help me prepare for this massive adjustment. If you have any recommendations or tips from personal experience let me know!

Teami 30 Day Detox Review

The holidays did me dirty.

So many tamales. So much wine. All the carbs.

After the new year I was desperate to jump back on the wagon but felt so sluggish and fatigued I couldn’t motivate myself to get my shit together.

Enter the Teatox.

I have to admit I have always scoffed at the women who promote tea detoxes on social media and silently judged them for promoting something that likely didn’t work just to make a quick buck.

I am not a fitness model. Clearly. I’m not even into fitness. My favorite part of going to the gym is leaving. I’m a mom. I work a full-time, high stress job. I have an affinity for candy and simple carbohydrates. I’ve been curvaceous my entire life but as most curvy women can attest, you constantly have to tow the line between sexy thick and sloppy thick – and the difference between the two is usually a couple good months of no holds barred eating and too many nights parked in front of a Real Housewives marathon. The struggle is all too real.

So after getting desperate for a kick in the ass and doing some heavy Amazon research I was convinced, and placed an order for a Teami 30 Day Detox.

The detox is made up of two different teas. One is the “Skinny Tea” and the other is the “Colon Cleanse”.

The Skinny Tea is a loose tea you drink first thing every morning. I purchased the cute Tumbler they sell with a built-in strainer so I could take my tea on the go but a $2.99 tea ball from Wal-Mart would work just as well. You can drink as much as you’d like throughout the day to curb cravings. I enjoy my tea black and though it has great flavor on its own but you can add lemon or sweetener to taste. The tea does curb appetite and help to reduce bloating. I actually was able to wean myself off coffee completely in the process.

The Colon Cleanse comes in a tea bag that you steep for 1-3 minutes and drink before bed every other night while you’re on the cleanse. The longer you steep the teabag, the stronger the effect will be. The name says it all – it will certainly clean you out the next day – but it’s not uncomfortable and you won’t be running to the bathroom all day. For anyone who has an impossibly sluggish digestive system like me, this stuff is a lifesaver. I found that after a couple weeks the I was getting used to the tea and the effect wasn’t as strong so I started steeping the tea for 5 minutes instead of 3 and that did the trick.

Combined with calorie and food tracking (I limit myself to 1320 calories per day – but I do let myself cheat a bit on the weekends) I was able to lose an incredible amount of bloat with this cleanse. I dropped inches and lost 5lbs in 30 days – but what really impressed me was how I looked. My body just looked slimmer and less bloated. I had energy, didn’t feel sluggish or fatigued and was fitting into my clothes better.

Weeks 1-4
All in all I was incredibly impressed with the Teami Detox and will definitely make it apart of my lifestyle moving forward!

Serum Foundation 101

Just when we think we have amassed a makeup collection that covers all the bases – some brand new product hits the market that we simply cannot live without.

For me, that product is serum foundation.

Thanks to the overwhelming influence of Korean beauty trends, these light, fluid foundations are popping up on the shelves from basically every relevant brand in existence.

What is a serum foundation?

The name is pretty self-explanatory but basically it’s an extremely fluid and lightweight foundation (similar to the texture of a traditional skin serum) that has a natural, skin-like finish while also offering coverage. Obviously you’re not going to be getting the same type of coverage from a serum foundation as you would from a full coverage liquid but it’s definitely enough to even skin tone and balance texture.

Why do I need this?

Although the heavy-duty foundation definitely has a place in your makeup bag, a lighter, more user-friendly everyday foundation is something that has been a bit of a unicorn for me. BB Creams are light but not buildable. Foundations with non-matte finishes melt of by the end of the day. So because this type of foundation is light and thin, you are able to customize the amount of coverage you get. Use 1-2 drops for a sheer, natural finish. Use 3-5 drops for more coverage with a matte finish. Let’s not forget that many also come with broad spectrum sunscreen up to SPF 30 – which eliminates an extra skincare step in the AM.

How to apply:

For light, sheer coverage: Dispense a couple drops onto a round end of a damp BeautyBlender and apply directly to the skin by bouncing the sponge up and down.

For fuller coverage: Dispense 3-5 drops onto the back of your hand and buff onto the skin in circular motions using a synthetic foundation brush such as this one (steal!) or this one (splurge!).

Try these:

Smashbox Camera Ready BB Water Broad Spectrum SPF 30 – This multitasking BB water with SPF 30 is an ultra-hydrating and oil-free formula that creates a sheer, radiant finish that lasts all day. It delivers a demi-matte complexion that’s never flat, creating a natural-looking canvas, and it minimizes the look of fine lines, pores, and blemishes. This unique BB water allows you to build coverage and does not cause any drying, cracking, or caking during wear.

Perricone MD No Foundation Foundation Serum, $60 – No Foundation Foundation Serum instantly softens imperfections and minimizes the appearance of wrinkles and pores with neuropeptides without settling into fine lines. A luxurious fluid texture ensures a semi-matte suede finish with a breathable second skin effect.

Sephora Teint Infusion Etherial Natural Finish Foundation, $24 – The ultra-fluid texture of this formula flawlessly melts onto skin for buildable light-to-medium coverage and the feeling of wearing no foundation at all. The formula glides on for foolproof application and moisturizes to create visibly smoother skin.

MAC Studio Waterweight SPF 30 Foundation$33 – Introducing an innovative foundation that delivers colour in an ultra-fluid, elastic gel- serum formula. With a virtually weightless feel, this formula is extraordinarily comfortable, lasting for hours. With stay-true colour and sheer medium buildable coverage, it softly blurs imperfections such as pores and fine lines, while also controlling oil. The addition of Moisture-Fusion Complex provides immediate and all-day hydration, leaving skin feeling quenched and silky to the touch. The unique dropper provides you with a drop of perfection.

…or make your own!

Take a medium to full coverage foundation that you already have (I’m using Revlon ColorStay in Fresh Beige)…

and dispense a nickel sized amount to an artist’s palette or, in my case, a blank CD…

Grab your favorite skincare serum (mine is KAPLAN MD Cellular Rejuvenating Concentrate)

Dispense 1-2 drops directly into the foundation.

Add more serum or foundation until you get the consistency you like.

Voila! Your own serum foundation.

November Favorites

  1. Batiste Dry Shampoo in Wild, $7.99

I have been hearing nothing but good things about this surprisingly affordable dry shampoo so I picked one up and it certainly did not disappoint. It makes my second and even third day hair look fresh, soft and bouncy while leaving the most beautiful scent. My main issue with a lot of dry shampoos is that they do not absorb well, so you get this white, dusty look after using – but this guy absorbed all excess grease and then disappeared without a  trace. I will definitely be repurchasing!

2. Sonia Kashuk Color Crazed 10pc. Brush Set$36.99

I picked this brush set up at my happy place (Target) because I loved the dark-teal color of the brush hairs. I mean, how gorgeous are they? Fortunately their quality is equally amazing so these babies are here to stay. They are all great and multi-functional brushes but the crown jewel is this little baby right here. It’s a contour brush with dense bristles that picks up the perfect amount of bronzer and carves out your cheekbones while perfectly following the natural curves of your face. Seriously, it makes contouring a snap, even if you’re not as experienced with makeup. In my opinion, this guy is worth the $36 price tag by itself, and the other 9 brushes are a bonus. This is a limited edition brush set that is currently available at Target in limited quantities, so I would grab them now if you’re interested.

3. Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer$32

I was on the fence about purchasing this primer but I’m so glad I did. This is an ultra-hydrating primer infused with Coconut Water to brighten up the skin while also smoothing the surface. It is so hydrating and lightweight I am tempted to use it as a moisturizer (don’t do that, I’ll let you know why in another post). Makeup glides right over it and blends to perfection. Did I mention it smells amazing? Like an island vacation? Well, it does. My only suggestion would be that if you have a very oily t-zone (as I do), layer a more mattifying primer to those areas only to control excess oil.

4. Laura Geller Baked Gelato Swirl Illuminator in Gilded Honey, $26

I don’t think there is a beauty guru on the planet who has not tried this highlighter and come back to sing its praises. I am no exception. This beautiful illuminator gives me the most gorgeous, golden glow. If your goal is to attain a cheekbone highlight that can be seen from space – this is your guy.

5. Laura Geller Real Deal Concealer in Light

I had a hard time justifying the price of this concealer with how little product you actually get but once I used it it all made sense. This full-coverage concealer literally covers everything with one, tiny drop. It is a very thick consistency but still blends flawlessly. It’s perfect for highlighting as well as covering undereye bags and dark circles. Set it with a translucent powder for zero creasing and all-day staying power.

6. Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Berry & Melted Fig, $21

I originally bough this lip color for the novelty, I mean, it’s a lipstick melted down into a liquid. That’s pretty cool. Once I used it, however, I was officially hooked. This lip color is bold, vibrant, creamy, blendable and very long lasting. You’re getting all the color payoff and staying power of a matte to demi-matte lipstick in a very easy to use format. I love how smooth they glide on and how easy they are to apply. My two favorites for this season are without a doubt the Berry and Fig. The Berry is a gorgeous cranberry color that can be deepened with liner and the Fig is a soft, plum-mauve that can be dramatic or subtle depending on how you do the rest of your makeup. Either way, they’re both extremely versatile and flattering.

7. Glamglow Powermud DualCleanse Treatment$19

I purchased the smaller sized version of this mask so I could see how it worked for me and it looks like I’ll need to be ponying up for the full size soon. I have long been loyal to my Glamglow Powermud Clearing Treatment but this is an amazing mask to alternate with. It leaves my skin soft, clean, and super-bright plus it smells AMAZING. I have zero complaints about Glamglow’s entire product line (that I’ve tried) – their treatments and cleansers always do exactly as they promise.

8. Apple iPhone 6S Plus$749

I took the plunge on the new iPhone 6S Plus and am not disappointed. I’m sure it does all sorts of awesome techie stuff but really, it’s all about the camera on this one guys. I typically use my Sony A5100 for blogging but I am reaching for my iPhone more and more. Not to mention the front-facing flash…it’s like they heard my prayers. I also love the new Live photo feature which captures three seconds of video along with every still image so when you press on it, it appears like an animated GIF. It’s not so much functional as it is just, cool. Take all my money, Apple, per usual.

Aurora Gel Effect Nail Lacquer in Inky Dinky

The Claim:

Wish you had a nail polish that had all the pros of gel polish and regular polish? Say hello to GEL EFFECT nail polish! It’s easy and convenient to use, dries super fast without a UV lamp, is extra shiny and durable, and will last up to two weeks. It can also be easily removed with polish remover! Talk about the best of both worlds.

  • Dries without a UV lamp
  • Leaves a durable, shiny finish
  • Easy to remove

It’s a pretty royal purple hue. I can definitely picture it slaying on some stiletto tips.

I haven’t painted my own nails in two decades so nail polish doesn’t thrill me. I prefer more muted tones on my own nails so this isn’t a shade I would ever pick for myself.

Meet Matt(e) Hughes Long Lasting Liquid Lipstick in Committed by The Balm

The Claim:

theBalm introduces a truly loyal long-lasting liquid lipstick—Meet Matt(e) Hughes. This long-wearing formula has a comfortable matte finish with no commitment issues. This matte vanilla mint liquid lipstick is stuck on you without feeling clingy!

This is a gorgeous liquid lipstick formula that goes on creamy and dries to a true matte finish. It held up wonderfully throughout the day and the shade was a perfect nude. Did I mention it tastes like those mint chocolates they give you at Olive Garden? It does.

There are other liquid lipsticks on the market that are highly comparable to this one at a much lower price point and with a larger shade range.

Even though I really liked this, I remain loyal to my ColourPop Ultra Mattes – so no.

This exfoliant truly met all expectations. The abrasives were gentle, yet effective and my skin was SO soft and radiant after using it.

I really have zero complaints.

I think a brand that stands for something is amazing – and this brand’s commitment to being safe and cruelty-free is admirable.

I am not a fan of unscented lotion. To me there was nothing special about this and I’m not really subscribing for hand lotion.

The Claim:

This is a professional angled tweezer in quality steel. It applies the perfect amount of tension and maximum precision.

They’re pink! Plus they come in a handy little tube that is perfect for throwing in your purse or makeup bag.

They don’t work as well as my Tweezermans. They’ll get the job done but I’m not impressed enough to switch.

I was pretty unimpressed with my bag this month. Although I loved the Dr. Brandt’s microdermabrasion and liquid lipstick from The Balm – the body lotion and nail polish were less than thrilling.
